Microdotting of all vehicles is a legal requirement as legislated with effect from September 2012.

Applicable legal documentation:

•  National Road Traffic Act, 1996 (Act No. 93 of 1996)

•  SANS 534-1 “Vehicle security – Whole of vehicle marking Part 1 Microdot systems.”

•  Chapter 5 (Motor Vehicle Records) as in the Second Hand Goods Act.

 

The legal requirement for Microdotting: - amendments on the National Road Traffic Act, 1996 (Act No. 93 of 1996) and its amendments as published in Vol 548, dated 1 February 2011, No. 33979.

 

• Regulation 56 1A requires all vehicles first registered in the Republic on or after 1 September, 2012, to be fitted with microdots. This places an obligation on the manufacturer or importer to ensure that vehicles have microdots before being sold or made available to the public.

•   “(1A) A motor vehicle registered for the first time in the republic on or after 1 Sept 2012, shall be fitted with microdots which comply with the requirements of standard specification SANS 534-1 “Vehicle security – Whole of vehicle marking Part 1 Microdot systems.” SANS534-1.

 

•  Regulation 337 B, on the other hand, deals with vehicles requiring a police clearance certificate and the responsibilities of the South African Police Services in execution of this law. The regulation requires that the title holder ensure that the vehicle has been microdotted, if it has not already been done by the manufacturer.

All new vehicles fabricated  after the 1 September, 2012 should be microdotted.  But, if your vehicle has been stolen and recovered, deregistered or you have fitted a reconditioned engine into your vehicle, a police clearance certificate is required, and in order to comply with same, you will need to have your vehicle microdotted.
